The story of Matteograssi began in 1880, in the town of Mariano Comense in the Brianza area. It was here that the head of the Grassi family opened a workshop for crafting saddles, bridles, reins and all the other leather equipment that horses needed for work and transport. The family’s business changed after World War II, since Brianza was becoming one of the liveliest industrial areas in the country, and the Grassi family adapted to the changing times. In the 1950s and 60s, thanks to their lengthy experience in the saddlery sector, the family gradually began producing items in leather for a host of other companies, including the most celebrated names in interior furnishings. In 1978, the family decided to create Matteograssi and its own line of furnishings.
Since the very beginning, Matteograssi collections have been distinguished by special attention to design. Tito Agnoli, Carlo Bartoli, Piero Lissoni, Alessandro Mendini, Franco Poli, Eoos, Luigi Massoni, Jean Nouvel, Matteo Nunziati, Mauro Lipparini and Rodolfo Dordoni are just some of the names that have designed chairs, tables, sofas and beds for the company over the years. These talented designers are the “genetic heritage” of Matteograssi and contribute to shaping the business decisions of the company. The quality of Matteograssi craftsmanship has enabled the company to experiment with seating designs for environments where leather is considered to be such a delicate, hard-to-maintain material that it has traditionally been excluded.
That’s the reason behind Matteograssi’s specialisation in the airport sector, in office design and in public areas. Matteograssi’s first waiting rooms were created in the 1990s at Fiumicino, Frankfurt and Malpensa, followed by international projects for Charles De Gaulle Paris, Athens, Dubai, Beijing, Bucharest, Kiev and Djakarta airports, along with VIP lounges for many airlines.
Matteograssi’s success stems from a flexible production system that can create custom solutions with great value-for-money, along with a superior ability to communicate with business partners around the world, an efficient organization, and the fine appearance of the company’s projects, which have consistently featured ergonomic solutions and innovative functions.
In 2004 the company has been awarded with the “Compasso D’oro Award” for the seating system Kube (design: Eoos).
